Difference Between Flight Safety and Flight Security

Security and safety are two different words yet used interchangeably. However, both names are essential, especially in air travel.

By definition, flight security involves a set of resources and measures to prevent terrorism or any malicious act targeting passengers, flight crew, and aircraft itself. The process of flight security involves pre-boarding procedures, airport security personnel and intelligence gathering. Some of the procedures involved in maintaining security in flights include explosives detections and X-ray machines.

On the other hand, flight safety relates to all activities that reduce errors, accidents, and unintentional defects in the aircraft’s construction, design, and maintenance.

Even though air travel is the fastest means of moving from one place to another, its security is at the core of all aviation concerns. There has been a lot of development undertaken by different airport managements to improve flight safety and security.

Importance Of Airport Security

According to Omar kaddouha, aviation flight safety expert, security in airports is a big issue nowadays. An increase in security measures in airports and aviation industries has increased the number of people travelling by air. Also, airport safety is crucial since it helps in the development of the world’s economy.

Technology plays a vital role in flight safety and security. It has a significant influence in ensuring efficient operations, making flights safe and faster. Tools like AIT and biometric systems are employed in different airports to facilitate safety and security.

The Safety Policies Of Aircraft

It is the duty and responsibility of every pilot to put safety first above every other desire. The safety of flight is translated to the things that influence your choice instead of a luxury. Therefore, you need to select a safe aircraft before going for other aspects like style, colour, and luxury.

In case of any threat like the pandemic, airports are pushed to implement safety measures quickly. Among the expected safety policies that can be implemented according to Omar, kaddouha include touchless checkpoints, increase use of mobile features, and shorter lines.

Importance Of Airport Security

Terrorism protection

There have been several terrorist attacks in airports and mid-flight. Inadequate security checks have resulted in hijackings in different aeroplanes, which will lead to loss of life and damage to properties. Improvement of security protocols will eradicate airport terrorism.

Reduce Smuggling

There are many illegal goods transportation in airports, like stolen antiques and exotic animals from one country to another. However, stringent airport security has reduced these cases drastically.

Protection Of Passengers In The Airport

Mass shootings have been experienced in many country’s airports. To enhance security, some governments have increased military personnel to guard all airport entries and exits.

Difference Between Flight Safety And Security

Flight safety aims at reducing human errors, system failure, and mechanical malfunctions. The below functions need to be done to achieve flight safety

Air traffic control

  • Set of air traffic management€
  • Maintenance and operation standards.
  • Encouraging pilot’s health before and during the flight
  • Proper training and mental capacity

Flight security aims at reducing external threats like terrorism. The aviation sector can implement the following measures to come up with tight flight security.

Installation of detection system for drugs, explosives, and certain material

  • Random screening
  • Providing secure flight programs
  • Fortification of cockpit doors against unauthorised entry and weapons
  • Training of flight crew on weapon handling and usage
  • Giving rights for pilots to carry a weapon while on flight
